Tenjō Sajiki comes from the companion Kyōgen costume to Dengaku, one of a pair dating to the nineteenth century. Its large-scale pattern is recreated on hemp and linen using both hand screen printing and hand-carved wooden blocks. The name refers to Shūji Terayama’s experimental theatre company Tenjō Sajiki, a defining presence in Japan’s postwar avant-garde.
